You find a product with great margins, go to list it on Amazon, and see the message: “You need approval to list in this category.” That is gating. It stops many new sellers in their tracks, but it is also an opportunity. Every gated category or brand has fewer sellers competing for the Buy Box. Here is how ungating works and how to get approved.
What gating is and why Amazon does it
Amazon restricts some categories, brands and products so that only trusted sellers can list them. The goal is to protect buyers from counterfeits, unsafe items and poor quality. Restrictions can apply at three levels:
- Category: certain categories need approval before you can sell in them at all.
- Brand: many well-known brands are restricted, even in open categories.
- Product (ASIN): individual listings can be restricted, for example for safety reasons.
Requirements change over time and can differ by account, so always check what Seller Central shows for your account.
Step 1: Check what you need approval for
In Seller Central, search for the product under Add a Product. If it is restricted, you’ll see a “Listing limitations apply” note and a button to Request approval. Click it to see exactly what Amazon wants for that category or brand. Some sellers are approved instantly. Others are asked for documents.
Step 2: Get the right invoices
Invoices are the heart of most ungating requests. Amazon generally looks for invoices that:
- Come from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, not a retail store.
- Show your business name and address, matching your Seller Central account exactly.
- Show the supplier’s name, address and contact details, so Amazon can verify them.
- Are recent and show a meaningful quantity of the product.
Never edit or alter an invoice. Amazon checks documents carefully, and altered paperwork can lead to account problems that are much worse than a rejected application.
Step 3: Submit a clean application
- Click Request approval on the restricted item or brand.
- Upload clear, complete invoices as PDFs or images, with every page.
- Answer any questions accurately and consistently with your account details.
- Submit and watch your Seller Central notifications for a response.

Why ungating requests get rejected
- Retail receipts instead of supplier invoices.
- Name or address mismatches between the invoice and your account.
- Suppliers that can’t be verified, with no website, phone or address.
- Old invoices or quantities too small to look like a real business.
- Weak account health, with high defect rates or recent policy warnings.
Keep your account healthy while you grow
Amazon is more likely to approve sellers with strong metrics. Keep your Order Defect Rate low, ship on time and answer customers quickly. Our guide on how to avoid Amazon account suspension covers the metrics and daily habits that protect your account.
Is ungating worth it?
Often, yes. Gated categories and brands have fewer sellers, which can mean better margins and an easier path to the Buy Box. The key is to do it properly: real suppliers, real invoices and a healthy account. Shortcuts like fake invoices or “ungating services” that promise guaranteed approval put your whole account at risk.
Frequently asked questions
What does ‘gated’ mean on Amazon?
A gated category, brand or product needs Amazon’s approval before you can list it. Amazon uses gating to protect buyers in areas with higher risk of counterfeits, safety issues or quality complaints.
Can I use retail receipts to get ungated?
Usually not. Amazon generally expects invoices from a manufacturer or authorized distributor. Receipts from retail stores are commonly rejected because they don’t prove a legitimate supply chain.
How long does Amazon ungating take?
Some approvals are instant, others take a few days after you submit documents. If Amazon asks for more information, answer quickly and make sure every document matches your account details.
Is ungating permanent?
Approval usually stays in place, but Amazon can review it again, for example after complaints or policy changes. Keep selling genuine products and keep your invoices on file.
